The project rethinks aftermarket bike lights through an environmental lens. It begins with a full LCA and teardown of a typical light set to identify real impact areas, revealing two key issues: oversized batteries and a non-repairable, non-recyclable construction.
The outcome is a functional front–rear lighting system that meets the use case, lowers the energy footprint, and demonstrates how an overlooked waste stream can become a durable everyday product.
The smaller size and reduced battery life encourages users to take the light with them, reducing theft - a common premature end-of-life for bike lights.
The assembly relies on mechanical fasteners and gaskets, not adhesives, which allows for repair, easier recycling, and a longer product life.
